Building Confidence in Your Child
Having confidence can make a big difference in how successful one is in their life, so building confidence in our children at an early age is one of the most important things we can do as parents. From supporting their individual interests to setting an example with how we approach our personal challenges, making sure we are establishing a strong foundation of self-assurance all begins at home. Here are three ways to make sure you’re setting your children up with the self-confidence they need to achieve their goals – no matter how big or small they may be!
Learn From Mistakes
Setbacks are a part of life and the older we get the more we begin to realize this. A child, however, can see a setback as their world ending and can carry the fear of failure with them into future challenges or opportunities that may come their way. It’s important that we take the time to explain to our children that although winning or achieving a goal is a huge life moment, what they learned along the journey is equally as valuable. Explaining that the hard work and dedication that was put towards their goal did not go to waste can help ease the fears a child might have when approaching a daunting challenge. Worrying about making a mistake shouldn’t be something that discourages your child to take a risk and try something new. Mistakes should be positioned as the ultimate learning lessons for your child. As long as you support your child throughout their journey, win or lose, the experience and knowledge they’ll gain is priceless.
Encourage Helping Others
The positive effect of helping others is truly immeasurable. Not only does it benefit society overall, but it also creates an incomparable feeling of self-worth for the individual that is offering the help. Helping others can come in many shapes and forms, but the end result is always inspiring. Something as small as encouraging your child to teach a younger sibling, cousin, or friend how to play a favourite game will provide an immediate confidence boost. Taking the time to volunteer for a community organization with your children will introduce them to important skills and showcase how giving back can make a difference. When a child witnesses their time or skills having an immediate and positive difference in the lives of others, they will feel empowered and be given the confirmation they need to pursue their next challenge with poise.
Let Them Dream Big
Growing up can sometimes make us think in a more practical way. Work responsibilities and our families become our priority, and we need to do whatever it takes to keep our promises and provide for the ones we love. Our children though, well this is their time to dream! Maybe they want to be the next Taylor Swift, or travel into the depths of space; but whatever the case, this is when parents can help guide their child towards achieving their wildest dreams. Sure, your child’s aspirations may seem a little far-fetched, but why not let them hope to achieve the greatest things. Surround your children with the tools they need to work towards their goal, educate them in the topics that interest them, and most importantly, be interested in the pursuit towards their dream. You’re more than likely going to be having a few questionable meals from your aspiring chef, but you could also be entertaining a future Food Network star! Believe in your children – it’s the biggest confidence boost they can ever receive.
