What is Picniic?

Picniic is a dashboard that combines all the key areas of your family life, providing a system for effortless family management. Picniic goes beyond a shared calendar. From planning meals, to centralizing important family information, to knowing where your kids are located at any moment — Picniic's goal is to bring all your family activities and data into one place so you can spend more time enjoying each others' company. This allows everyone to stay more connected and in sync as a family unit.

Is Picniic free?

Picniic is a free download from the App Store. Creating a family account is simple and easy to do. Every member of your family's account can access the app for free just by downloading Picniic. Picniic is a powerful tool for organizing your family.

Picniic's Premium Settings unlocks additional features such as our Meal Planner, Info Locker, Family Locator, Special Events, 2-way syncing with Google, Apple, and Outlook calendars, and TeamSnap Schedules. You’ll also get access to Picniic's premium settings, which give you more control over how information is displayed, access to pre-made lists to help ensure you never forget important items, and additional features for creating events.

You can purchase a premium subscription here. If you haven’t created your account yet, we’ll help you get set up. If you already have an account, you just need to log in to make sure the subscription is applied to the right family.

Should I be concerned about privacy?

Absolutely not! Picniic’s only source of revenue is through subscriptions. We don’t sell your data to 3rd parties, and we don’t serve ads within the app. Any data we do collect is only used internally to make your experience better.

How do I change my password?

Settings
Changing your password

The password for your family account can be changed at any time from the Settings screen. If you've already signed in to your family account, you can navigate to the Settings menu by tapping the gear icon in the top right of the Dashboard, then under Family Account, tap the row called Password.

If you're unable to sign in and need to reset your password, you can do that by tapping Already Have Family Account and then tapping on Forgot Password to have a password reset email sent to your family account email address.

Is everyone in my family on the same account?

Yes! Everyone in your family shares the same account and will use the same email and password to log in. This way everybody is kept in the loop! All members of your family will be able to see what everyone else is doing, how busy they are, and who has to feed the dog today.

Each member can contribute to Picniic by adding events, to-dos, and more, assigning them to themselves or another family member.

How do I add my family members?

There are two ways to add family members. When you are setting up your family account, you will be prompted to add your family members. After you add your family you will have the option of sending them a note inviting them to download Picniic. You will need to tell them the email and password used to create the account so they can log in.

If you already have an account and you want to add new people you can easily add them from the Settings menu. To access settings, tap the gear icon on the top right of the dashboard screen. Scroll down to My Family and tap Add Member. Afterwards, use the invite button in settings to let them know how to log in to your shared account.

Picniic allows a maximum of eight members in a family, so if you already have eight people you will not be able to add any more.

Can I choose what my family members see?

With Picniic, everyone will have access to the same information. We want your family to be able to see not only their own schedule and tasks, but everyone else's as well. That way you'll always be able to see what everyone in the family is up to.

How do I use a promo code?

Applying a promo code

Promo codes can be applied in Settings. To get there, tap the gear icon on the top right of the Dashboard screen. Scroll down to Premium Subscription and tap Add Promo Code. If you’re already upgraded to Premium, you won’t be able to use promo codes.

How do I delete my Picniic account?

If you feel like your time with Picniic is coming to an end, please send us a quick email at support@picniic.com and we'll discontinue your account, removing all of your family's personal information at the same time.

Family News
Live activity

The Family News tile is your live activity feed of what your family is doing in Picniic. You'll see all the newly created events, to-dos, meals, and more. You can even send messages and pictures!

If your family has upgraded to Premium, you'll be able to choose what updates are posted here, allowing you to focus on what's most important to you.

Calendar Day View
A shared family calendar

The Calendar is the core feature of scheduling and organizing your family. The Picniic calendar is shared between all members of your family and is the clearest way to update them with what the family is doing. And creating new events is easy. Simply tap on the '+' button in the bottom right of the Calendar tile and select Add Event. Add your event title and set the length of time the event will take. You can also have the event repeat at any interval, make it an all day event, add a location or alert, and attach a list. Additionally, all events can have one or more family members assigned to them. Any event that you're attached to will appear in the Day view of the calendar under your picture. You can tap on each family member to focus on their events for each day. This way you can easily see how busy everyone is and never miss an overlap or miscommunicate plans.

Choose between Month or Day views

Navigating between the Month view and the Day view is simple too. You can tap on the calendar view icon in the top right of the calendar to easily switch between each view. In Month view you'll notice that the days with white dots are the days that have events assigned to you. Days with dark dots are days that members of your family have events, but are not related to you.

Repeating events

Repeats can be helpful when you’re entering information for events like work shifts, sports practice schedules, and regular appointments.

  1. Create or edit your event in the Calendar.
  2. Scroll to the Repeat section and select Daily, Weekly, or Annual.
  3. If you have chosen Weekly, select the day(s) of the week that the event repeats on.
  4. If you have chosen Monthly, you'll either need to choose the day of the month or day of the week. Day of the month means it will repeat on the same date each month (e.g., the 5th). Day of the week means it will repeat on the same day (e.g., the 2nd Monday of each month).
  5. If you want, you can add an end date for the repeats to stop them repeating at a specific time, or you can set the repeat to end after a set number of times. Otherwise, the event will keep repeating until you change or delete it.
  6. If you have an event or that only happens every few weeks, you can increase the interval. An interval of 2 for a weekly event means the event will repeat every second week. An interval of 5 for a daily event means it will repeat every 5 days.
  7. Tap Back then Done.
  8. You will now see your reminder repeating, per your settings.

Picniic lets everyone in the family connect their external calendars. You can link up work calendars, sports practice and game schedules, school calendars and more. Linked calendars can be managed from the Connect Calendars tile.

Other Calendars to Picniic
Subscribe to other calendars in Picniic

Share read-only events from other calendars (like work, sports, or school) to your Picniic family calendar. Events are updated automatically*, and you'll have the option to either show or hide the event details. Events will appear in the Day view of your family calendar.

Directions for subscribing to your other calendars:

* Changes made to events in third-party calendars may take anywhere up to 15 minutes to update in your Picniic calendar.

Share your family events in a read-only format to other calendar programs, or even another Picniic account. You have the choice of sharing your entire family schedule or only events for specific family members.

Subscribe to an Apple Calendar in Picniic

Please note: to simplify this process, we recommend syncing Apple calendars using iOS devices.

Follow these steps to add your read-only calendar feed to Picniic:

Connect Calendars Apple
  1. Select the Connect Calendars tile on your Picniic dashboard.
  2. Choose 2-Way Subscribe.
  3. Tap the '+' button in the bottom right.
  4. Select Apple.
  5. Log in to your Apple account. If you have 2-factor authentication enabled, tap the I've Already Done This button and skip to Step 11.
  6. If you don’t have 2-factor authentication enabled, you’ll need to add it. Apple does this to ensure your account is secure. Don’t worry, Picniic will help you set this up.
  7. Select Okay, and launch settings to open your iOS device settings.
  8. Tap on your name.
  9. Select Password & Security.
  10. Then, turn on two-factor authentication.
  11. Next, you’ll need to create a password that’s specifically for Picniic. Log in to your Apple ID.
  12. Select Security.
  13. Under the App Specific Passwords section, select Generate Password.
  14. Enter the label you want to use for this password (probably “Picniic”), then tap Create.
  15. Copy the password that Apple has created, then enter your Apple email and paste your Picniic-specific password into the form that pops up.
  16. Choose the sub-calendar that you want to sync into Picniic.
  17. In the next screen, fill out the settings for that calendar, and choose Next.
Subscribe to a Google Calendar in Picniic

Follow these steps to add your read-only calendar feed to Picniic:

  1. Select the Connect Calendars tile on your Picniic dashboard.
  2. Choose 2-Way Subscribe.
  3. Tap the '+' button in the bottom right.
  4. Select Google.
  5. Sign in to your Google account.
  6. Choose the sub-calendar that you want to sync into Picniic.
  7. In the next screen, fill out the settings for that calendar, then choose Next.
Subscribe to a Yahoo! Calendar in Picniic

Follow these steps to add your read-only calendar feed to Picniic:

In Yahoo:
  1. Sign in to your account at calendar.yahoo.com.
  2. Select the calendar you want to share from the drop down menu at the left.
  3. Choose Share… in the list of options next to the calendar.
  4. Select Generate links.
  5. Copy the ICS link (it should be the second one in the list) and then email it to yourself.
  6. Open the message on your phone and copy the link.

In Picniic:
  1. Open the Connect Calendars tile on your Picniic dashboard.
  2. Tap 2-Way Subscribe, then choose the Something else option.
  3. Paste the link you copied and tap Add Calendar.
  4. In the next screen, fill out the settings for that calendar, then choose Next.
Subscribe to an Outlook Calendar in Picniic

Follow these steps to add your read-only calendar feed to Picniic:

  2. Choose 2-Way Subscribe.
  3. Tap the '+' button in the bottom right.
  4. Select Outlook.
  5. Sign in to your Outlook account.
  6. Choose the sub-calendar that you want to sync into Picniic.
  7. In the next screen, fill out the settings for that calendar, then tap Next.

Follow these steps to share read-only Picniic events to your other calendar:

  1. Select the Connect Calendars tile on your Picniic dashboard.
  2. Choose Share out your Picniic events.
  3. Tap the '+' button in the bottom right.
  4. Select the family members you want included in the link.
  5. Tap on Done.
  6. Copy the link and email it to yourself.
On your Mac:
  1. Open the calendar link on your computer and copy it for later.
  2. Open the Calendar app and choose File > New Calendar Subscription.
  3. Paste your Picniic calendar link, and then choose Subscribe.
  4. Enter a name for the calendar in the Name field and choose a color from the pop-up menu.
  5. If you have an iCloud account, choose whether you want the calendar to appear on that account.
  6. To update the feed of Picniic events when changes are published, choose the update frequency from the Auto-refresh pop-up menu.
  7. Choose Okay.
On your iPhone or iPad:
  1. Open the calendar link on your device and copy it for later.
  2. Open your the Settings app.
  3. Select Mail, Contacts, Calendars (or just Calendar on iOS 10 and above).
  4. Under Accounts, select Add Account.
  5. Choose Other.
  6. Under Calendars, select Add Subscribed Calendar.
  7. Paste your Picniic calendar link and select Next.
  8. Choose your desired settings, then tap Next.

Follow these steps to share read-only Picniic events to your other calendar:

  4. Choose Add by URL.
  5. Paste your Picniic calendar link and select Add Calendar.

Follow these steps to share read-only Picniic events to your other calendar:

In Yahoo:
  1. Open the calendar link on your computer and copy it for later.
  2. Sign in to your account at Yahoo.com
  3. Open Mail and then go to Calendar.
  4. At the bottom of this section, select Manage (the gear wheel icon) next to Others.
  5. Select Follow Other Calendars.
  6. Paste your Picniic calendar link in the iCal Address field and give the calendar any name you like (e.g., "Picniic").
  7. Press Continue.

Follow these steps to share read-only Picniic events to your other calendar:

  3. Tap the '+' button in the bottom right.
  4. Select the family members you want included in the link.
  5. Tap on Done.

In Outlook:
  1. Open the calendar link on your computer and copy it for later.
  2. Sign in to your account at Outlook.com
  3. Open the menu in the top left and choose Calendar.
  4. In the sub-menu bar, select Add Calendar.
  5. Choose From internet.
  6. Paste your Picniic calendar link and choose Save.
TeamSnap calendars

Families who upgrade to Picniic Premium can also integrate their TeamSnap calendar. If you have a TeamSnap account, you can connect it to Picniic from the TeamSnap tile on the dashboard. Picniic will update with all the events sent from TeamSnap and assign them to any family member you wish.

One-time events import

Picniic provides the option to do a one-time import of any calendar that you've connected to your Apple Calendar. This will copy all the events you have from your calendar to your Picniic calendar.

To access this feature, head to the Connect Calendars tile on your dashboard and choose One-time events import. When you import, you'll be able to decide which family members are tagged in the events.

Deleting imported events

Imported events can be managed from the Import section of the Connect Calendars tile. You can delete individual imports by selecting the imported calendar, then tapping Delete at the bottom of the settings page. If you want to delete all imported calendars, then you can tap the Delete All button in the top right of the main screen to get rid of all of the events.

Importing events on Android

Right now, importing is only supported on iOS devices. Sorry about that!

Removing synced calendars

There is a Delete button at the bottom of the settings page for each synced calendar. Tapping this will remove all synced events from that calendar in Picniic.

To-Do & Lists

To-Do & Lists
Stay on track

To-dos & lists are the fundamental building blocks of organization. With Picniic, you can create to-dos and lists all in the same place. Each to-do or list can be assigned to one or more family members and checked off by anyone.

To create a to-do or list, simply tap on the '+' button in the bottom right of the To-Do & Lists screen and select the item you wish to create.

Manage to-dos and lists

To complete a to-do, tap on the empty circle to the left of the to-do description. Completed to-dos are not deleted automatically; but you have the option to show or hide remaining items using the toggle button at the bottom left of the screen.

If you'd like to delete a to-do, tap to open it and press the Delete button. To delete a list item, tap the '−' delete button beside each item in a list. To delete an entire list, open the list, tap Edit in the menu bar, then scroll to the bottom of the list and choose Delete This List.

Please note: Deleted items cannot be recovered.

Family Photos

Family Photos Timeline
A safe space for cherished memories

Upload photos for everyone in your family to enjoy. Photos here are safe and private; they are only visible to members of your Picniic family. If you want to share them with other people, that’s easy to do with a few taps.

To upload a photo, tap the '+' button in the bottom right. You can either take a picture and have it added right away, or you can choose a picture from your existing photos.

To share a single photo from the timeline view, tap the share icon at the bottom of the photo. To share multiple photos, go to the batch view by tapping the check mark icon in the upper right corner.

To delete a single photo, select the photo from the timeline view, then tap delete. To delete multiple photos, select the photos from the batch view, then tap delete.

Circles

Circles Main

Circles are the best way for your family to coordinate with your extended family, caretakers and nannies, and other families. These private groups allow you to easily share out information from your Picniic account while keeping the rest of your family data private and secure.

What should I use Circles for?

Anything you can think of! There are no limits on how you can use Circles, but we think they are especially useful for:

  1. Coordinating carpools or ride-shares with other families
  2. Separated families
  3. Sports teams
  4. Party planning
  5. Coordinating with childcare providers
  6. Planning group vacations

Adding events, lists, and to-dos to a circle

There are two ways to add to your Circle. You can add items directly to the circle from the Circle tile. Enter the Circle feed and press the '+' button on the bottom right.

You can also add items to circles by tagging the circle in it. After creating or joining a circle, in addition to tagging family members in events, tasks, and lists, you will also be able to tag your circles

You can share photos from the Family Photos tile by tapping the Share button after you have created or joined a circle. Photos can also be added directly to the circle from the Circles tile. Enter the circle feed and press the '+' button on the bottom right. Careful! If you add photos this way, then they can be deleted if the circle is deleted.

Inviting other people to a circle

From the Circle feed, tap the '+' button and select Invite. You can invite people directly from your contacts, or send the invite manually.

Inviting people who don’t use Picniic

People who don’t use Picniic can view your circle on the web. They will receive email notifications when items are added to the circle, so they always stay in the loop. Please note, non-Picniic users are not able to add or edit items in circles.

Leaving a circle

When you leave a circle, all items from that circle are removed from your family.

Deleting a circle

When you delete a circle, everything in it is deleted, so be careful! Any events, to-do, list, or photo that were added to the circle will be deleted. If you added a photo to the photos tile first, then shared it to the circle, then it will still be in your account, but it will disappear for any other members of the circle.

Only the owner of a circle can delete it.

Shopping List

Stay on top of all your shopping lists, separated for all your favorite stores, and keep them in sync with everyone in your family. Does one store have Dairy before Produce? Easy, just change the aisle order for that store list. And like all lists, the store lists are shared between your whole family, so adding items will update the list on everyone else's devices, no saving required.

Last call for last-minute snack additions!

Say goodbye to missed items and second visits to the grocery store! The Last Call button allows you to quickly and easily send a message to your family to let them know you're grabbing the groceries. When you send a last call, your message will post in Family News, alerting your other family members by push notification that you're out shopping. If they have any last-minute additions to the list, they’ll know which list they should add to.

Recipe search

With Picniic, you can discover new recipes from top online food websites like Jamie Oliver, Martha Stewart, Epicurious, and many more, all in one place. And if you need inspiration, the Recipes home screen will also update with fun meal ideas every time you visit. To search for a recipe, tap the search icon on the main screen, then type your keywords into the search bar and we’ll check the best sites for recipes that match!

Find something you like? Save it to the To Try section so you can give it a test-run. Love it? Save it to Loved so you can always keep track of your family’s favourites. Recipes can be categorized by the meals like breakfast, snacks, lunch, and dinner, so you can easily find find what you’re looking for.

Writing recipes

Have an old favorite recipe that you want to add to Picniic? Custom Recipes is the space where you can write and save your favorite recipes that have been passed down through your family. To add a custom recipe, tap the '+' button in the bottom right of the custom recipe section and select Write Recipe. You can add photos, cooking time, notes, and more to the recipe so you always make it just right.

Saving recipes from around the web

Can’t find the recipe you want? Picniic lets you save recipes from other websites and save them for future reference. To add a recipe from the web, tap the '+' button in the bottom right of the Custom recipe section and select Add from Website. You can paste the URL in the navigation bar, or you can use Google to search for the recipe you’re looking for. Once you’ve found the right recipe, tap done and the URL will be saved so you can quickly find the recipe again at the tap of a button.

You can add ingredients from any recipe by tapping the Add to Shopping List button at the bottom of the ingredient list. If you only need a few things from the list, you can choose which items get added. Have more than one list? Picniic allows you to choose which Shopping List the ingredients should be added to, so you can always keep things organized.

Meal Planner

Plan your family's meals

Plan for the week ahead by adding single meal items or recipes to any day of the week. Meals appear in your Calendar at the bottom of the Day view as well as in the list in the Month view. Meals can be added by any member of the family so it's easy to find something that everyone wants for dinner.

Add recipes to each day

To add a recipe to a day simply tap the day you want to edit, and tap the Add from Recipes button. If the recipe you chose had a meal type applied to it like “lunch,” then it will go to that section by default. If you want to drag meals into a different section, use the button on the right side to drag it into place.

You don’t always need a recipe to plan a meal. If you want to add meal items without using a recipe, simply type into the section that says Tap to enter meal item. After you’re done typing, tap Done and the meal item will be added to the plan. If you want to add a sub-item like “side salad” tap the meal item and add as many sub items as you need.

Get some mealtime inspiration

Need help thinking of ideas for dinner, or want to quick-add recipes like a power user? The Stay Inspired panel is your friend! To access the panel, tap the magnifying glass on the right side of the week view of the Meal Planner. You'll see a list of your saved recipes. Using the search function here will search your recipes, and more. If you find something you want to add, tap it, then tap the day(s) you want to add it to. When you’re done, tap the recipe again to de-activate it.

Info Locker

Encrypted info storage

The Info Locker is an encrypted storage space for all of your need-to-know family information. We ensure that your information is secure and accessible by you and your family alone. You can add info to four main sections: Key Contacts, Medical Information, Household Info and Accounts & Licenses.

In each section, you’ll be able to add data that is relevant to your family. Want to add your Wi-Fi name and password? Store it in Household Information. Can’t remember the babysitter’s phone number? Check Key Contacts. Can’t seem to find the healthcare policy number for the kids? It’s in Medical Information. Booking a flight and need everyone’s passport numbers? They’re in Accounts & Licenses.

Picniic provides templates for information, but we also allow you to customize your own fields. Want to add a photo or change the title of a text field? Everything can be edited to make the Info Locker work for your information. You can even attach PDFs so important documents are always at your fingertips.

Top security with passcode protection

Due to the sensitive nature of the information stored in the Info Locker, you can opt to add another layer of security by setting a passcode. Setting this up is simple. On the main Info Locker screen, tap Set a passcode and punch in a 4-digit passcode. Try to use a number you will remember. If you forget your passcode, we can’t recover it for you.

Important: Resetting your passcode will erase all of the data you’ve entered in the Info Locker.

Family Locator

Check in on the go

The Family Locator uses your devices location to update your family on where you are at any given time. You can check in manually, or you can turn on Auto-Post to have Picniic send updates with your location as you move around. You can check the Locator’s map to see a real-time view of where everyone is. Tapping each person’s profile will let you know how long it’s been since their location was last updated.

Please note: Picniic requires a data connection and access to device location to send and receive location updates.

Setting up Places

You can create Family Places like school, work, and home, so that you get custom notifications when family members arrive or leave. Family Places can also be given custom names to make it easier to keep them straight. Each family member can set up their own custom notifications for every other member of the family.

Track birthdays, anniversaries, and traditions

With Special Events, Picniic makes it easy to remember all of those important birthdays, anniversaries, and traditions. Your Picniic family members’ birthdays will automatically be added here. Adding new dates is as simple as tapping the '+' button in the bottom right and following the prompts. If you have birthdays added to your phone contacts, use the import button in the top right to quickly add them. Picniic helps you keep track of the important things that your family likes to do together, to make sure you always have time for what counts. Traditions will repeat yearly by default, but you can set up custom intervals if your tradition happens on a different schedule. Family members can be tagged in traditions just like Calendar events.
